Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)/ Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to the world. To overcome these challenges, the European Commission has set the ambitious goal of becoming the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. This goal is at the heart of the European Green Deal. The move towards a climate-neutral society will affect all sectors of the economy, from the energy sector to the industrial sector. Transport, construction of buildings, agriculture and forestry are mentioned as most important sectors of the economy.
The ability to make a scientifically sound environmental impact assessment is one of the most important aspects of climate change management. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) are tools for providing sustainability compliance information.

What is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)?
Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the systematic analysis of the environmental impact of products or services throughout their life cycle, from resource extraction to waste management. This includes suppliers and downstream processes related to production (such as the production of raw materials, consumables and production of consumables), the use phase and waste management (such as recycling or disposal of waste).
Through life cycle assessment, the manufacturer has the opportunity to better analyze and optimize the production technology and raw materials used in order to reduce the environmental impact of the product by improving sustainability and competitiveness.
The results of the LCA are used to prepare the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
What is an EPD Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a document that provides transparent information on the environmental impact of any product or material during its lifetime. The EPD is a report on the environmental performance of a product. The declaration has been verified by a third party and registered in the EPD system.
The EPD is usually valid for five years and is based on international standards (ISO 14040, ISO14044, ISO 14025). In the construction products industry, EPD is based on EN 15804. EPD and LCA also serves as a basis for building sustainability prevention schemes such as LEED, BREEAM and other assessment schemes.
